Oh Bears, what do we do with thee?

Remember 2018? Young offensive guru head coach, Matt Nagy, bringing in the Andy Reid system, with then 2nd year QB, Mitchell Trubisky. The trade for Khalil Mack, the 1st round pick Roquan Smith. Allen Robinson coming off an ACL injury, looking to shine. Nobody knew what to expect after an abysmal final year with John Fox and co. The opening night against the Packers, Aaron Rodgers hurts his leg, and the Bears take advantage! Then we all know what happened. I remember my final tweet from that night. “I don’t care if the Bears go 0-16, this is going to be a fun team.” It was a fun team! They had the Mitch injury for a few games, the Miami dud, the Giants upset, the glorious defensive shutdown of the LA Rams! So many highlights, the offense looking competent, though stats would say otherwise! A defense giving people nostalgia of 1985. Oh what a time. Then the double doink, which I was sitting directly with, in the 300 level at Soldier Field. I fell 6 rows down in heartbreak and disbelief. The Today Show sad sack of Cody Parkey. The offseason of standing still. 2019 season kicks off, I am sitting in the north end zone as the Bears and Packers open the Chicago Bears 100th season with a weird dud of a game in which the Bears mutter 3 whole points. Here we go again….an up and down 8-8 season full of anger and questions. Firing the OC, OL coach to see what can be fixed. Chuck Pagano doing a decent job of filling the DC void that Vic Fangio left. We hit this previous offseason. Hey, Robert Quinn, cool, he’s been good in his career, opposite Khalil he can do some damage that Leonard Floyd couldn’t! Kyle Long retires. We can get a new QB in Cam Newton or even Andy Dalton! Wait what did they just do? They traded for NICK FOLES?! Why? Oh he knows Nagy’s system? That is the only reason? He can read defenses? I mean, OK. Tashuan Gipson takes over at SS. Ted Ginn Jr., Jimmy Graham, the drafting of Cole Kmet, Jaylon Johnson, and Darnell Mooney. Ok, again, we went 8-8, the team clearly has issues, but let’s see what they can do. Hey, they open against the Lions, should be a good way to get a W. (1st 3 quarters happen) Oh dear lord, here we go again. Mitch sucks, bring in Foles already! (4th quarter happens) MITCH IS MIGHTY! Then they get the giants, meh, then they go to Atlanta…Mitch throws what can only be defined as a um, bad interception. Here comes Foles. What a comeback! Run to the L Anthony Miller! 3-0 start, defense looking strong! Foles could be the answer! Bring on Indy!

Oh no, Indy is good, our OL can’t protect a statue. Sad game. Oh well move on, we are still 3-1! Here comes Tompa Bay, and oh boy big test. Butt cheeks clenched the entire game, Foles leads a drive to get a GW FG, and TB12 didn’t know it was 4th down, Bears move to 4-1! Carolina has no Mccaffery, their defense is meh, hopefully we can get it done. Foles throws some dumb picks, but hey, a victory. The Bears are 5-1! The worst 5-1 team in history, and atop the NFC! Then what happens? LA embarrasses the OL, the OT game with New Orleans that could’ve been won. Go to Nashville and stop Derrick Henry, but can’t play offense again. Ok regroup, it’s Kirk Cousins on Monday night, he’s 0-9! Nagy gave up play calling, should look better! Well, that didn’t turn out so well, and Nick Foles may have broken his back. Let’s get to the Bye week, and regroup. Matt Nagy pressing soul searching and finding answers for this team. Mum on Nick Foles injury and if Mitch will start. Twitter clamoring for Mitch for at least bad fun, not just bad. Alright another prime time game, Sunday night in Lambeau. Ok, Aaron Rodgers is on one tonight and the defense looks sluggish. Oh hey David Montgomery, big run! Ope nothing on 1st and goal, oh god fumble in the end zone?! Nope incomplete. Ok 50-50 ball to Allen Robinson…incomplete! Settle for 3. GB comes right back with another TD. Mitch throws deep into double coverage….and intercepted. GB scores again. Let’s not talk about the rest. Defense bad, offense gets garbage time TD’s, throw it away. The Bears have lost 5 in a row and sit at 5-6, outside of the Wild Card by 1 game. Oof.

So this week Matt Nagy said that what Green Bay did to the defense can’t happen. Tony Dungy saying on national TV that the Bears defense just gave up and quit on their coaching staff. The talk of Nagy on the hot seat, Ryan Pace should’ve been gone last year, and Ted Phillips 21 year run should be ended. This is going great. Look I don’t believe Matt Nagy should be fired. I think Ryan Pace and Ted Phillips should absolutely be gone. However that still leave the McCaskey’s looking for the replacement, 😑. Chuck Pagano is not a good interim coach candidate and neither is Bill Lazor. Nagy will definitely finish out the year, and should. Nagy prides the team on their upbeat attitude and their ability to stick together. Those who have left have other things to say; but I’m not here to get into that. I think Nagy hand picked Foles to bring in and that is where most of the anger comes from, that was a failure. His offense is broken and he refuses to change it because he doesn’t have any other ideas most likely. That should be his offseason project is rebuilding his own identity. I do believe they should also move on from Chuck Pagano as he is using everyone wrong. Especially Eddie Jackson, who needs to be able to roam and ballhawk, not be your nickel corner blanket and 3rd linebacker. Khalil Mack dropping in coverage, as well as Robert Quinn. Re-signing Danny Trevathan has been a big miss. Yes, Eddie Goldman opted out, and that is his absolute right and glad for him, but you knew that. You need to adjust. They had 13 days to get ready for GB defensively and dropped a dud, knowing Akiem Hicks playing was not a guarantee. That is what really angered me. Also knowing Devante Adam would pick on Buster Skrine all night. So where do they go from here? 5-11 won’t get you that high of a pick, 7-9 is bad mediocre, 8-8 is mediocre, 9-7 misses the playoffs more than likely, and 10-6 is highly unlikely. My best guess is they finish 8-8, buying at least Nagy 1 more year, and Pace is let go, but Ted Phillips stays. Buckle up!
