The Bears are in Purgatory, and Their Fans are in Hell.

Were you like me and laughed when the Bears decided to throw the ball on 3rd and 4 from their own 8 yard line? Did you scream ball when it was knocked from Mitchell Trubisky’s hand? Have you screamed out to nobody that you have no heart left for the Bears to break? You’re probably not alone in any of those scenarios.

The losing streak has reached 6 games, the offense looks better but still can’t get piece together complete drives. The defense has been abysmal and Chuck Pagano refuses to address the blatant issues. So where does that leave you as a Bears fan? In hell. The Bears aren’t in a position to get a top 10 pick, and not in a position to make the playoffs. They are in purgatory, and their fans are in hell. At 5-7, they are last in the NFC North, and 1.5 GB of a Wild Card in the NFC, with the new 7 team format. They need a ton of help to make the playoffs, as well as needing to win out. The coaching staff is lost and everything is on fire in Halas Hall. By that I mean, there is speculation that several staff members will lose their jobs by tomorrow, but I don’t believe it will actually happen. At least not with 4 games left. There will definitely be a shift after the season, but I don’t believe it to be as seismic as some believe. George McCaskey loves Ted Phillips and Ted Phillips loves being quite bad at his job. Even if they fire Pace, Phillips gets to pick the new under achieving front office face. Look at his track record: Jerry Angelo, Phil Emery, and Ryan Pace. Oof. Then if you also fire Matt Nagy, who is going to pick the coach? Will they wait for a new GM to hire a coach or will Ted Phillips have to do that too? There is no scenario where the Bears come out of this season in a spot that will make their fans want any part of their franchise.

So what else is there to look at? The lack of offensive line play, a QB you invested 4 years in, a career backup you’re tied to for at least 2 more years, and no cap space after hemorrhaging money into your pass rush that doesn’t exist. The personnel decisions have been horrible, the coaching staff hasn’t figured out what to do with them the last two years. Matt Nagy was asked, why has this team declined the last two seasons? His answer, “I don’t know”. You don’t know?! Apparently all of the fans know, you don’t have a running game, your plays don’t work, and you have a constant lack of adjustments from your Defensive Coordinator. It truly hurts to watch a team crumble into nothing with Super Bowl aspirations not that long ago. Now you’re in rebuild mode after swinging and missing the last two years.

So what do we root for? Full on tank? To see constant improvement but go 7-9/8-8? Or for the team to get hot, finish 9-7 and hope they get a playoff shot to eventually get destroyed in the first round by a much better team? There are definitely players who cannot wait for this season to be over and leave the Bears, then there are players who wish they could leave but are tied here for a few years. There is obviously some issues with Halas Hall’s philosophy of staying positive and sticking together, the main issue, it’s bullshit. The only one drinking that Kool-Aid is Matt Nagy. He’s alone on this island, but he is hallucinating that others are there with him, ready to swim with the sharks. Next up for the Bears: The Houston Texans – and Deshaun Watson. 😊
