Well, let’s just call that presser what it was, the biggest clown show of all clown shows. A shit show, the dumbest show on earth, a big blob of bland. I could go on, but what’s the point? It was a new format for the end of year presser, they split up the core 4 of the Bears into two groups: George McCaskey, Chairman of the Chicago Bears, and Ted Phillips, President and CEO of the Chicago Bears, were paired together. Then Ryan Pace, General Manager of the Chicago Bears, and Matt Nagy, Head Coach of the Chicago Bears, were paired together. Each member gave what they called “opening remarks” and then took questions after both members gave their remarks. It was very different, we hadn’t seen or heard from Ted Phillips in some time, we usually just see Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy giving an end of season presser. However, with all the outside heat on whether or not both or either should come back, it brought forward Ted Phillips and George McCaskey to defend the decision to keep both Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy on the staff. The media brought some heavy questions to George McCaskey and Ted Phillips, and some really heavy hitters for Ryan Pace, but we’ll get to that. The media was obviously appealing to fans by asking the questions they did, but most of them missed the press room to see the body language up close and personal and really feel the pressure on the answers from the staff. Understandably, with the Zoom conference, the staff are in their element, whether from their offices in Halas Hall or in their home offices, they felt comfortable. In a big press hall, looking at the amount of media that shows up, can catch them off their guard and really make them pressured into giving open and honest answers. The Zoom setup, makes it easy to keep everyone at a distance and not have follow up questions. This really worked out in favor for the Bears staff members answering the questions, and they knew it.
George McCaskey was first to give remarks, as the Chairman for the Chicago Bears, you would hope he would be the one to get out in front of everything. He prepared a written statement, that was underwhelming to say the least. He opened his statement thanking all those in the country working through the COVID-19 Pandemic, naming hospital staff, retail, food service, hotel service, and those helping in the communities to keep things going. Then he went into talking about missing the fans at Soldier Field this year due to the pandemic, which was touched on in the Q&A, in some detail. Commended the players and coaching staff for following the protocols put in place by the NFL and the Chicago Bears, and singled out Head Trainer Andre Tucker for doing an amazing job communicating and keeping everyone up to date on protocol behavior. George McCaskey then said something that irked everyone who heard it, he praised Ted Phillips for his leadership, and then backed up his continual faith in him. There had been as he stated “vigorous discussions” over the past few weeks with Ted Phillips, Ryan Pace, and Matt Nagy, that were candid in nature. The first time he talked about Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy, he praised their collaboration, which was a word he would use about 10,000 more times during the Q&A. The 4 headed snake, talked together the two days after the Playoff loss to New Orleans, about growing and learning from this season, and what to come of next season. Additionally, he added the Bears understand the frustration from fans, and the talk of overhauling the front office, and that the decisions that were made were in the best interest of the Chicago Bears organization.
The whole opening statement was a huge, stinking pile, of crap. George McCaskey is not only tone deaf in the ways of football, but in the business sense of running an organization. No, I didn’t expect for him to come out and say “We are not a good football team, I know Ted Phillips hasn’t done anything worth a damn in his tenure, and I should fire him” but at least have a sense to the gravity of the situation. Your GM has failed 3 times at the QB position to find a franchise QB, signing Mike Glennon, a career backup if there ever was one, trading up to the #2 pick to draft Mitchell Trubisky, and then in the past offseason trading for Nick Foles, because that was Matt Nagy’s guy who could run this offense better. Mitchell Trubisky was the best QB of the 3, and that isn’t saying much, but you also have to look at how your head coach schemed his offense, it wasn’t to fit the personnel brought to him by the GM. The stubborn nature of your head coach, and the ineptitude of your GM, has cost you a window that you had momentarily. You have to then look at the guy who is responsible for the body of work, which is your president Ted Phillips, who hired Ryan Pace, who had no previous experience as a GM but was lauded as a “great football mind”, and that was your big reasoning. George McCaskey treats Ted Phillips like he is his grandfather, George Halas, he is a staple in this organization. How can Virginia McCaskey, the owner of the Chicago Bears, keep looking at her sons failures, and not do anything? I understand he is your family, but this a business, its not a family business, its a $3.5 Billion organization. This is not a mom and pop shop, that they think it is.
I have nothing left to say that hasn’t already been said. Due to the remainder of the presser being the same words recycled over and over again. The QB search is going to fail, the team will diminish into mediocrity and I will still watch and be lost. Bear Down isn’t a slogan, it’s advice.
