Al’s Cinematic Analysis: Bull Durham

IMDb says this movie is about a fan (played by Susan Sarandon) who has an affair with one minor-league baseball player each season, and meets an up-and-coming pitcher (Tim Robbins) and the experienced catcher (Kevin Costner) assigned to him.

I say this movie is about sex and the characters happen to play baseball.

So, let’s get into the review.

How realistic to the sport is the movie?: This is a movie about baseball. From a playing baseball perspective-it was fine. They pitched the ball, they hit the ball, they made errors, and, because it was A ball, they traveled to away games via bus. What I did not buy was that Ebby Calvin ‘Nuke’ LaLoosh gets promoted to “the Show” and bypasses both AA and AAA. Tell me the last time that happened. You can’t.

For this reason, the movie gets a 4/5 on realistic scale.

How horny is the movie?: The people in this movie could have played football and the message of the movie would have been the same. This is the horniest movie I have watched in a long time. Sex everywhere. Look, I am not mad, but maybe it’s time to stop calling this a baseball movie.

5/5 on the horny scale.

Was it funny?: I promise you, the sex in this movie is very serious. The baseball? Pretty funny. I laughed out loud multiple times. The coaching staff was especially laughable. Other funny characters include a clown and a mascot.

3.5/5 on the funny scale

Who should I watch this with?: Look, you do you. I personally wouldn’t want to watch this with an 8-year-old. I also would not want to watch this with my father. This would be good for a friend movie night. Maybe, just maybe, if you’re trying to get some, you should watch this with a date.

Overall, this movie was enjoyable. As this is the first movie in this series, I can’t say where it will fall, but I do think it will fall in the middle of the pile somewhere. I wasn’t blown away, but it was also a feel good and chill movie for a Thursday night in.
