Al’s Cinematic Analysis: High School Musical

Released in 2006, High School Musical was an iconic part of my childhood. I did not need to rewatch this movie to review it, but why not?

If you would like the IMDb synopsis because this movie is not from your time it is as follows:

A popular high school athlete and an academically-gifted girl land roles in the school musical and develop a friendship that threatens East High’s entire social order.

As a reminder, I will be reviewing all cinematic sports masterpieces against the same criteria so that we have a fair playing field. So without further ado, here is my review of this classic coming-of-age movie.

How realistic to the sport is the movie?: Look, I won’t even begin to know basketball, but if I am being honest there isn’t really much of it played in the movie.

However, Troy Bolton is the coach’s son and the star of the squad. Coach is also very threatened when his kid thinks he might want to pick up a different hobby. This experience feels very real, even if the actual play part is kind of just there.

Troy gets some points for his lived experience but not that many.

2/5 on the realistic scale.

How horny is the movie?:

There is a lot of flirting in this movie, but there isn’t even a smooch at the end when the whole school lives happily ever after. How lame. Give me smooches, Disney!

1/5 on the horny scale.

Was it funny?:

This is a loaded question. Funny? Not really. Kind of cringe? Maybe a little. There is just something about a 2000s DCOM that screams over-the-top cheesy acting. It warms my soul.

3/5 on the funny scale.

Who should I watch this with?:

As stated above, there is nothing more than hugging in this movie. You theoretically could watch this movie with anyone. I will warn you though, there is a lot of song and dance (see the musical part of the title). If you’re not into life-changing musical movies, then suit yourself.

You will notice the scores for this movie are stinky. I will, however, always encourage anyone and everyone to watch High School Musical. It is a comfort movie and you don’t have to think a lot while you watch it.

Are we all in this together or is this movie not what you want? All I know is you shouldn’t stick to the status quo.
